Finally, a decaffeinated coffee for coffee lovers! A lot of decaffeinated coffee just tastes bad. Solvents, sometimes used in the decaf process, can negatively affect the flavor of coffee, but they also cause significant health concerns for many. As a result, people who like really good (and safe) coffee, will just avoid Decaf altogether. But, if you're sensitive to caffeine or have certain health issues, what can you do?

The Swiss Water® Decaffeination Process changed all of those issues and today, Specialty Coffee roasters can offer their customers decaffeinated coffees that rival the flavors and complexity of their finest, regular coffees, and all without the use of caustic, man-made, chemical solvents either. Our Costa Rican El Indio Swiss Water® Process Decaf Coffee is profoundly delicious and, once you try it, we think you'll want to order it again and again.

In fact, we'd be surprised if most people could distinguish this coffee from a regular Specialty Coffee. It's not just "really good Decaf," it's really good coffee.

Flavors:

Costa Rica El Indio decaffeinated coffee is a classic San Marcos coffee from the high altitudes of the Tarrazu region of Costa Rica. Featuring flavors of milk chocolate, nuts and citrus, this coffee is smooth and easy to drink with a medium body and a "clean cup," meaning there are no discernable flavor defects.

It's a long, long way from the decaf of old and you can serve it with confidence to your guests who might normally turn up their noses at a decaffeinated brew. Or, just keep it all to yourself! And since the Swiss Water® Process uses only water to remove 99.9% of the caffeine, you can rest easy that you won't be drinking any, potentially harmful, man-made chemicals.

Recommended Roast Level:

Medium

As a Specialty Coffee, this Decaf definitely wants to be roasted at a Medium Roast level and we recommend avoiding any significantly lighter or darker roast. However, if you prefer a bit less brightness and a bit more sweetness in your cup, we can roast further into the Medium range. Let's call that Medium+. It's a slight difference in time, but still within the range of a Medium Roast. This will reduce the acidic flavors a bit (in this case citrus) while enhancing the nutty and milk chocolate flavors. However, for the best balance of flavors, we recommend Medium Roast.

Better Coffee:

We roast only the highest grade of coffee, Specialty Coffee, which represents the top 10% of all coffee sold in the world. Don't be misled by marketing terms like "Gourmet Coffee" (which has no definition) or Premium Coffee (think Starbucks) which is a lesser grade than Specialty.

Unfortunately for coffee lovers, the vast majority of retail coffees available to the consumer are lesser grades, with the bulk of coffee sold in America (Exchange Grade/Commodity Coffee) falling as low as 40 points below Specialty Coffee grading. Most of that sits in warehouses or on store shelves for unknown and undisclosed lengths of time. And, since most coffees don't display a roast date, you have no way to know how old they really are.

At best, most coffees function reasonably well as cheap, competent caffeine delivery systems. But, if you're a coffee lover, you'll have a difficult time finding great coffee on any store shelf. In fact, you've probably never tasted Specialty Coffee or Truly Fresh Coffee unless you've actively searched for it online.

Our coffees are roasted in small batches (less than 25 lbs ea) so that we (not a computer) can control every aspect of the roasting process using old world, artisan roasting techniques. This allows us to pay close attention to the unique, distinct character of each coffee that we're roasting and enhance those characteristics and flavors by adjusting the roast accordingly.

Fresher Coffee:

Our coffee is roasted to order in small batches and then hand-packed into standing, resealable, box pouches. The one-way valve allows your freshly roasted coffee to naturally off-gas CO2 while inside the bag. This enables us to pack your coffee almost immediately after roasting so that your order is exceedingly fresh, never having sat in inventory or on some warehouse shelf. In fact, we have no roasted coffee inventory - zero, zip, zilch, nada! Your coffee is roasted only after you order it and then shipped the very next day* so that it arrives at your door at its peak of flavor and freshness. And you'll know your coffee is fresh, because we stamp the roast date on every box and bag.
